It’s a great video. It’s absolutely fantastic.
Last Friday, Donald Trump became the 45th President of the United States, and during his inaugural address, he vowed to put “America first”. Now, the Dutch are inviting him to put “the Netherlands second” in a hilarious ‘promotional video’ from the satirical show Zondag Met Lubach.
While introducing the clip, Dutch comedian and TV host Arjen Lubach said: “The whole world was watching the inauguration. He had a clear message to the rest of the world: ‘I will screw you over big time.’ Well okay, he used slightly different words: ‘From this day forward. It’s going to be only America first’. And we realize it’s better for us to get along [so] we decided to introduce our tiny country to him in a way that will probably appeal to him the most.”
The fake promo from the Dutch government features a voiceover by Dutch-American comedian Greg Shapiro, who speaks with a Trump-style accent. The narrator pokes fun at Trump’s policies and controversies, “welcoming him in his own words”.
He says: “We speak Dutch. It’s the best language in Europe. We’ve got the best words. All the other languages failed. Danish… total disaster. German is not even a real language.” And concludes: “We totally understand it’s going to be America first, but can we just say: The Netherlands second?”
