The Killing, Ocean’s Eleven, The Usual Suspects, and Heat are some of the most popular Hollywood heist movies. These films depict the triumphs and misadventures of robbers who managed to steal millions of dollars from their target.
But what about in real life? Using everything from classic train-and-gun technique to high-tech methods, these are some of the most popular million-dollar robberies that shocked the world.
1. The Great Train Robbery, 1963
Hollywood has already translated The Great Train Robbery of 1963 into numerous films. August of that year, Bruce Reynolds and his gang of robbers boarded a train on the Bridego Railway Bridge in Buckinghamsire, England. The value of cash that they stole during that time equates to around £49 million today! In the wee hours of the morning, the Royal Mail Train headed between Glasgow and London was robbed by 15 men. Careful planning and plenty of inside information was used but interestingly enough, no firearms were used. Eleven men were sentenced to three decades in jail after the incident.
