Nike is releasing a line of performance hijabs for female Muslim athletes. The company’s highly-anticipated ‘Pro Hijab’ line will make sport more comfortable for Muslim women and is set to launch in spring 2018.
In a statement, Nike said it had been developing the head covering – made from a lightweight, flexible material – for more than a year. The company consulted with Muslim female athletes – including Egyptian runner Manal Rostom – during the design process.
And even though sporting hijabs have been around for a few years, Nike is the first major sports apparel maker to embrace the needs of Muslim women. Rostom says: “For a brand like Nike to come out and say that these people exist and are inclusive of hijabis is a big deal. It’s not just about making a product available for Muslim and Arab women but it is also giving a chance to those women who are putting off the idea of wearing the veil completely in order to compete.”
The Nike ‘Pro Hijab’ will be available in three colors: black, vast gray and obsidian. In addition to that, the garment features an elongated back, so that the tops stay in place during competition.
