“Something in the back of my mind said something is not right.”
A flight attendant has been hailed a hero after rescuing a victim of human trafficking. In 2011, Shelia Frederick – from Alabama – was working on an Alaska Airlines flight from Seattle to San Francisco when she noticed a teenage girl sitting next to a well-dressed older man.
According to the 49-year-old, the girl with greasy blonde hair “looked like she had been through pure hell”. Frederick says: “He was well-dressed. That’s what got me because I thought why is he well-dressed and she is looking all disheveled and out of sorts?”
Feeling uneasy about the situation, the flight attendant decided to approach the pair. But when she tried speaking to them, the girl refused to engage in conversation and the older man reportedly became defensive. Realizing she needed to act fast, Frederick told the girl to go to the bathroom, where she had posted a note on the mirror. The 10-year flight veteran adds: “She wrote back on the note that she needed help.”
Frederick then notified the pilots, who in turn alerted the police. The man was arrested as soon as the flight touched down in San Francisco. It has been reported that the girl is now attending college and is free from trafficking, all thanks to the flight attendant’s keen eye and smart thinking. Frederick concludes: “If you see something, say something.”
